  • Isle Of Man Steam Railway (part one) - Douglas to Ballasalla [4K]

The first part of our outbound trip on the IOMSR. Not the best views from the train but it was very busy, being the only full return trip of the day to Port Erin due to a loco shortage (soon resolved). We managed to ride in the vacant guards compartment of carr 17, alone until Castletown where even more people managed to cram in the train and we obtained a couple of unassuming gents who weren't bothered about looking out the windows (which was nice). We will continue to Port Erin in part two. Recorded mostly with Yi 4k action cam with a few minutes of Lumia 950 smartphone footage at the beginning.

  • Isle of Man Transport: Steam Railway Part One

Part one of a look at the Isle of Man's southern railway from Douglas to Port Erin. Mainly a tourist service, there were only two trains in operation over the 15 mile long route. The railway used to be much larger, extending North to Peel and Ramsey, but the route north was closed due to the competition from the Manx Electric Railway (which will be featured soon on this channel). The gauge is 3ft, and still uses the original stock from the 1870s. All the steam locomotives, built by Beyer, Peacock and Co, have a 2-4-0 wheel arrangement, except one: number 15, Caledonia, has an 0-6-0 arrangement as it was used on a particularly steep extension of the original line to Foxdale Mines. Only four of the original steam locomotives are operational (Loch, G H Wood, Hutchinson and Kissack (the l...

  • Isle of Man Transport: Snaefell Mountain Railway

The mountain of Snaefell (Snow Mountain in Scandinavian) rises 2036 feet above sea level, and from it you can see the Seven Kingdoms: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Mann, Heaven and the Sea. When the Manx Electric Railway reached the mining village of Laxey, the plans to construct an electric tramway to the summit of the mountain were released, and speculation ensued as to whether the trams would climb the 1 in 12 gradient on wheel adhesion alone. So, when construction began on the first British mountain railway (it predates the Snowdon Steam Railway) in 1894, the Fell Incline Railway system was adopted (where extra driving wheels gripped a central rail) but this was unnecessary as the trams had no trouble, so the centre rail was retained as a braking system (since changed to an emerg...

Filmed the day before the start of the 2016 fast craft season, this video shows a training exercise with Isle of Man Steam Packet Company vessel Manannan in Douglas Bay. The exercise involved testing the deployment of one of her Marine Evacuation Systems (MES). The chute and detachable survival raft were deployed and inflated in less than a minute, with Manannan’s crew sliding into the brightly coloured inflatable raft shortly afterwards. We deploy one of Manannan's four MESs every year, more regularly than required. This allows all new crew and a large percentage of returning crew to witness a deployment and descend the slide. Safety on board both of our vessels is of paramount importance, with our crews regularly completing drills of a similar nature to ensure that our passengers remain ...

Ben-my-Chree was ordered in 1997 by Sea Containers for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. Costing around £24 million, she was built by van der Giessen de Noord of the Netherlands and launched on 4 April 1998. The sixth vessel to carry the name, she is registered in Douglas, Isle of Man. Brought around to the island from the Netherlands by the late Captain Vernon Kinley, Ben-my-Chree entered service on 5 July 1998, Tynwald Day - the Isle of Man's national holiday. At a gross tonnage of around 12,000, she was the largest ship to enter service with the company. The vessel received a lot of criticism due to her low passenger capacity of 500 (carrying no more than 350 per sailing), and the fact she had no open deck for passengers. The company insisted this was a "comfort level" for the vessel's size. In 2004 the vessel underwent a refit carried out by Cammell Laird to increase passenger capacity with the addition of a new passenger module. In 2014 Ben-my-Chree underwent a £1.6 million refit which included new LED lighting fitted to the lounge areas, refitted the crew rest area. also carried out by Cammell Laird Incidents On 25 July 2008, Ben-my-Chree suffered a technical failure, with the Viking taking her Heysham sailing until she was repaired. On the evening of 1 May 2013 when arriving in Douglas Harbour from Heysham, Ben-my-Chree struck part of the King Edward Pier Linkspan, Number 5 berth. In the collision part of the ship was slightly damaged, meaning the evening departure to Heysham was delayed. Passengers had to wait around two hours for the arrival of "Manannan" from Liverpool to be transported to Heysham, arriving there only about thirty minutes late.Ben-my-Chree re-entered service the following day with a freight-only service to Heysham and was back in full service at 19.45 the same day.[7] In December 2011 the Ben-my-Chree suffered a number of cancelled sailings due to high winds and a problem with a bow thruster that had been damaged in May that year. Arrangements to dry dock the ship in June and then in September had to be cancelled after the manufacturers, Wartsilla, failed to complete the necessary repairs.[8] Chief executive of the Steam Packet Company wrote to the local newspaper, the Manx Independent to express the company's frustration at the ongoing problems. On 12 February 2015, Ben-my-Chree lost control and collided with fishing boat, while entering Douglas Harbour. The vessel's stern made contact with Battery Pier and a fishing boat at its mooring. It was found that the ship and the fishing boat only suffered superficial damage. The ship was checked by divers for signs of damage to the propellers and steering. It was then relocated to Victoria Pier using a tug boat - where passengers disembarked. On 2 May 2015, the morning sailing from Douglas to Heysham was cancelled and the afternoon return. Ben-my-Chree was suffering from a "bow thruster... only operating on reduced power". On 16 May 2015 there was a suspected chimney stack lagging fire was detected on the 8.45am crossing from Douglas to Heysham. The sailing arrived in Heysham Port around 1 hour late and no passengers or crew were injured. On 12 February 2017, the vessel made contact with the pier at Douglas whilst attempting to moor in high winds on arrival from Birkenhead (Liverpool). MS Arrow and HSC Manannan were planned to take over the freight and passenger duties.

Only four of the original steam locomotives are operational (Loch, G H Wood, Hutchinson and Kissack (the latter two seen in the video)) and one is under overhaul (Caledonia). There are also two diesel locomotives usually used for shunting (one at each terminus; Douglas' engine Viking can be seen in this video) and two railcoaches under restoration. So, when construction began on the first British mountain railway (it predates the Snowdon Steam Railway) in 1894, the Fell Incline Railway system was adopted (where extra driving wheels gripped a central rail) but this was unnecessary as the trams had no trouble, so the centre rail was retained as a braking system (since changed to an emergency braking system only, hence the rust...). When being built, an extra rail was laid to 3ft gauge as the IOM Steam Railway locomotive Caledonia assisted in the job but could not run on the 3ft 6ins gauge decided upon for the Snaefell Railway. The trams are equipped with four 25hp motors (a total of 100hp per tram), making them the most powerful trams in the country at the time of building. Six of these passenger cars were built, and all still run in service to this day. Number 7 was a freight wagon with a cab at either end and a six-ton freight wagon body in the middle. You can see in this video that one of the trams is being used as a works car pulling a skip full of material to the summit instead of 7 (whose remains sit next to the tram shed). Departing Laxey you can see where three tramway tracks all cross the road: Snaefell, MER Northbound and MER Southbound. As when crossing roads the trams must have their bells/whistles going, it is a very noisy area. Heading up the line you can see the famous Laxey Wheel. Bungalow station passes by, where passengers may alight halfway up or down, and the tram then continues up to the Summit, where the Summit Hotel was built at the same time as the tramway to serve refreshments to the tourists at the highest point on the island.

Safety on board both of our vessels is of paramount importance, with our crews regularly completing drills of a similar nature to ensure that our passengers remain safe while travelling with us. Cab view from my Manx Electric 'Ultimate Driving Experience' trip. Motor 7 + Trailer 48 Part 3 Video split into sections. I missed recording Laxey to Ramsey but did get the return trip. There were two drivers (me and another) and two Manx Electric employees to supervise us. The other enthusiast had done the 'basic' 'UDE' previously. Manx Electric allowed me to book an 'Intermediate' on the basis I already knew how to drive a Heritage electric tram.
